Orioles Open Road Series Against Reds Looking to Build Momentum

The Baltimore Orioles begin a three-game road series against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night at Great American Ball Park, with both clubs hoping to gain ground as the season reaches its midway point. Baltimore enters the series at 40-48 after salvaging the finale against the Chicago White Sox, while Cincinnati sits at 40-46 following a 7-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Despite their sub-.500 record, the Orioles have an opportunity to gain momentum before the All-Star break. ESPN's Matchup Predictor gives Baltimore a slight edge, projecting the Orioles with a 54 percent chance to win the opener.

The pitching matchup features two starters looking to turn their seasons around. Left-hander Trevor Rogers gets the ball for Baltimore carrying a 5-7 record with a 4.99 ERA over 79.1 innings. While his overall numbers don't jump off the page, Rogers has pitched much better recently, highlighted by his strong outing against the Washington Nationals in which he allowed just one run over 6.1 innings while striking out seven. The Orioles will be hoping that version of Rogers takes the mound Friday night.

Cincinnati counters with veteran right-hander Brady Singer, who enters with a 3-7 record and a 5.12 ERA. Singer has surrendered 94 hits and 19 home runs in 77.1 innings this season, numbers Baltimore's offense will look to exploit in one of baseball's most hitter-friendly ballparks.

Offensively, Pete Alonso continues to pace the Orioles lineup. The slugging first baseman leads Baltimore with 19 home runs and 59 RBIs, providing the middle-of-the-order power the club expected when he arrived. Taylor Ward has also been a steady contributor, leading the Orioles with a .250 batting average while consistently reaching base.

The Reds are led by rookie sensation Sal Stewart, who has emerged as one of the National League's top young hitters with 17 home runs and 60 RBIs. Dynamic shortstop Elly De La Cruz remains Cincinnati's most dangerous all-around player, batting .272 while providing elite speed and power.

Both teams have struggled with consistency this season. Baltimore ranks slightly ahead of Cincinnati offensively, hitting .239 as a team compared to the Reds' .228 average. The Orioles have also scored more runs (403-357) and own a better team ERA (4.39 compared to Cincinnati's 4.62).

Injuries continue to affect both clubs. Baltimore hopes closer Ryan Helsley will be available after being listed as day-to-day, while the Reds remain without ace Hunter Greene and several other key contributors.

For the Orioles, this series presents another chance to climb back toward .500. After dropping four straight before defeating the White Sox, Baltimore needs to string together consecutive wins and build confidence entering the second half of the season. Winning the opening game behind Trevor Rogers would be an important first step toward securing a road series victory against a Reds club fighting many of the same inconsistencies.

The countdown is officially on for Maryland football. With just 65 days remaining until the Terrapins open the 2026 season against Howard on September 5 at SECU Stadium, optimism is beginning to build in College Park. After a disappointing 2025 campaign, head coach Mike Locksley and his staff are looking to turn the page with a talented roster led by one of the Big Ten's most promising young quarterbacks, sophomore Malik Washington.

Washington enters the season as the face of the program after an impressive freshman campaign. The former Archbishop Spalding standout threw for 2,963 yards and 17 touchdowns while adding four rushing scores, setting Maryland freshman passing records and establishing himself as one of the conference's rising stars. His decision to return for his sophomore season was one of the biggest offseason victories for the Terrapins.

Now, the challenge becomes taking the next step.

Washington displayed poise, arm strength, and mobility throughout his freshman year despite Maryland finishing with a losing record. He consistently gave the Terrapins a chance to compete, showing the ability to extend plays outside the pocket while delivering accurate throws at every level of the field. With a full offseason as the unquestioned starter, expectations are significantly higher entering 2026.

The offense will revolve around Washington's ability to make plays with both his arm and his legs. His continued development in reading defenses, limiting turnovers, and making quicker decisions will be critical if Maryland hopes to climb the Big Ten standings.

The schedule presents opportunities but also major challenges. Maryland opens at home against Howard before traveling to Connecticut to face UConn. The Terps then return home for games against Virginia Tech and UCLA before beginning the heart of their Big Ten schedule, which includes road trips to Nebraska, Ohio State, Purdue, and USC while hosting Rutgers, Illinois, Wisconsin, and rival Penn State.

Improvement on defense will be just as important as Washington's growth. Maryland struggled to consistently stop opponents last season, putting extra pressure on the offense to keep pace. A more disciplined defense and improved special teams could be the difference in several close games this fall.

There is also excitement surrounding the young talent throughout the roster. Locksley has continued to recruit well, and many of those players are expected to contribute immediately. If the offensive line provides better protection and the running game becomes more consistent, Washington could emerge as one of the top quarterbacks in the Big Ten.

While expectations remain measured after last season, Maryland has reasons to believe a turnaround is possible. It starts with the sophomore quarterback under center. Malik Washington has already proven he belongs at this level, and now he has the opportunity to elevate the Terrapins back into bowl contention.

With only 65 days until kickoff, Maryland fans won't have to wait much longer to see whether Washington and the Terps can take the next step toward becoming one of the Big Ten's most improved teams in 2026.

Maryland Men's Basketball Reloads Under Buzz Williams for the 2026-27 Season

The countdown is on for Maryland men's basketball. With 128 days remaining until the Terrapins open their 2026-27 season against Georgetown on November 7, excitement is growing around College Park as head coach Buzz Williams prepares for his second season leading the program.

After an aggressive offseason in the transfer portal and on the recruiting trail, Maryland has assembled one of the Big Ten's most intriguing rosters. Williams blended proven veterans, experienced transfers, and elite freshmen with the goal of returning the Terrapins to NCAA Tournament contention.

The biggest returning piece is forward Pharrel Payne, who averaged 17.5 points per game last season and established himself as one of the conference's top frontcourt players. Payne gives Maryland an experienced interior scorer, rebounder, and defensive presence. Andre Mills also returns after averaging 12.2 points per game, while Guillermo Del Pino, George Turkson Jr., and Rakease Passmore provide valuable depth and continuity.

Maryland made its biggest splash in the transfer portal by landing former Arkansas point guard D.J. Wagner, who is expected to direct the offense. Boston University transfer Michael McNair brings elite perimeter shooting after averaging 16.9 points per game, while New Mexico forward Tomislav Buljan adds toughness and rebounding in the paint. Tennessee transfer Bishop Boswell gives the Terrapins another experienced defender on the wing, and Maban Jabriel, Robert Jennings II, and Alexandre K'Medehouto add quality depth throughout the rotation.

Their athleticism and upside should provide an immediate boost while strengthening Maryland's long-term outlook.

With a deeper roster, improved perimeter shooting, and veteran leadership, expectations are significantly higher entering the 2026-27 season. If the Terrapins develop chemistry early, they have the talent to compete near the top of the Big Ten and make a strong push for the NCAA Tournament. The season begins November 7 against Georgetown, giving Maryland an opportunity to make an early statement under Buzz Williams.
